Friends are for a season, reason or a lifetime❣️

Making friends as we get older can feel a little daunting, especially for women who are navigating life changes like retirement, relocation, or shifting social circles. Unlike in our younger years, where friendships naturally formed through work, kids, or school activities, we often have to be more intentional about meeting new people.

But connection is essential - having a strong circle of friends brings laughter, support, and a sense of belonging. It just takes a little effort to put yourself out there, whether it’s through shared interests, community events, or simply striking up a conversation with someone who seems like a kindred spirit.👯‍♀️

That’s exactly why I started a women’s group here in New Smyrna Beach. I wanted a way to bring together like-minded women who were looking for fun, friendship, and a sense of community. We meet regularly for casual outings, coffee chats☕, and new experiences - giving us all a chance to connect, share stories, and support one another.

It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done, and it’s a reminder that friendship doesn’t have an expiration date - you just have to be willing to take the first step.

CURT’S CORNER
Retirepreneur

As many of you know, I am currently enrolled at the University of Florida pursuing my MS in Entrepreneurship. So far it has been a great experience and filled up my days with “homework” 😬.

It didn’t make sense to me to pursue this degree without actually starting a new online business! I have developed a concept of an idea called Retirepreneur, was a winner in a pitch competition last year and invited to participate in the UF Big Idea competition this spring. If selected, I will have to perform a LIVE pitch which is NOT something I have experience with.

Sitting around a Board Room, no problem, public speaking, not so much.

The idea is still at the initial stage but I am making progress each week. If you want to check out a “rough version” [just the beginning] - click here =>

Loneliness in Retirement

Retirement is an exciting chapter, but for some, it can also bring unexpected feelings of loneliness. Studies show that a significant number of retirees experience isolation regularly. However, there are plenty of ways to combat these emotions and rediscover a sense of connection and purpose. Below are some simple, effective strategies to help you stay connected and fulfilled.

  • Stay Connected with Loved Ones
Keep relationships alive by scheduling regular phone calls or video chats. Even when far away, consistent communication fosters closeness and helps reduce feelings of isolation.

  • Explore New Hobbies
Retirement offers the chance to explore new passions. From painting to learning an instrument, hobbies provide purpose and can connect you with like-minded individuals.

  • Volunteer Locally
Volunteering brings both purpose and social connection. Whether it's helping at a local charity or mentoring, giving back can enhance your social circle while benefiting the community.

  • Stay Physically Active
Regular exercise not only boosts physical health but also improves mental well-being. Group fitness classes, walks, or yoga can help keep loneliness at bay.

Loneliness in retirement is common, but it doesn't have to be your story. By staying connected, exploring new hobbies, and staying active, you can embrace this phase of life with joy and fulfillment. Reach out today, whether to a friend or a new social group, and begin building a more connected retirement life.

Best Fitness Ideas

Staying active is one of the best ways to maintain energy, strength, and overall well-being in retirement. From low-impact exercises to engaging group workouts, there’s something for everyone. The key is to find a program that keeps you motivated and fits your lifestyle.

Walking Programs – A simple, low-impact way to stay active and improve heart health. Aim for 30 minutes daily and try using a tracking app for motivation.

Water Aerobics – Perfect for joint-friendly movement and strength-building. Many community pools offer classes designed for retirees.

Strength Training – Helps prevent muscle loss and supports bone health. Start with light weights or resistance bands for controlled exercises.

Yoga & Tai Chi – Enhances flexibility, balance, and relaxation. Available at local studios, community centers, and online.

Online Fitness Options – Programs like SilverSneakers and Grow Young Fitness provide structured, senior-friendly workouts at home.

Finding the right fitness program can make a big difference in staying strong and independent. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or strength training, choose something enjoyable and stick with it!
